Hemodynamics of the oral mucosa during cooling: A crossover clinical trial

ObjectiveOral cryotherapy is used to prevent the onset of oral mucositis, a common and debilitating adverse effect following cancer chemotherapy. A protective mechanism associated with cooling thought be mediated through reduced tissue microcirculation. The aim present study was examine underlying mucosal by measuring microcirculation oxygen saturation after ice chips (IC) an intraoral device (ICD).Study designIn single-center randomized crossover study, 10 healthy volunteers were assigned (1:1) randomly order in which two procedures (IC/ICD) commenced. On day 1, half participants started IC then crossed over ICD on 2, while other undertook same reverse order. Total functional capillary density (T/FCD) (StO2) measurements obtained at baseline 30 min cooling.ResultsFollowing cooling, statistically significant difference found for FCD between (percentage points; +2 vs. −13; p < 0.05). decrease StO2 observed both (%; 13 10) as compared (p As participants’ preference preferred 9 out = 0.021).ConclusionsBoth parameters are altered conjunction indicating their potential mechanistic contribution towards cryoprevention mucositis.
